How to Decide if You Should Sell Your Belongings and Start Fresh When You Move
After three cross-country moves, here’s what I’ve learned about “stuff,” and starting over with and without it.
Moving is one of the most stressful human experiences. It’s expensive, time consuming, and full of surprises. You uproot your life, your routines, and all your creature comforts with hope in your heart, and visions of greener pastures.
When you have a lot of stuff to take with you, it can be even more challenging to pack, organize, and figure out what to keep, sell, or donate-especially if you’re moving cross country or abroad.
Maybe you know someone who sold everything they owned, moved to Mexico to find themselves, and never looked back. You may wonder if you, too, should move to Mexico, with nothing but a suitcase, your laptop, and a prayer. I know I am tempted at least a few times a year.
Or maybe you’ve seen the Minimalists documentaries on Netflix, and how their quest for less made them feel more fulfilled and free.
I have yet to met someone who regrets the decision to downsize and simplify their lives.
